Newquay is not subtle. You've got surf beaches, cliff paths, families, school holiday energy, people carrying boards everywhere, and that slightly scruffy seaside confidence the town has always had. Done badly, that can feel hectic. Done well, it feels alive.
The hut and beach-stay offer is strongest around Tolcarne, where day huts sit right by the sand and the wider beach village setup gives you food, surf hire and somewhere to settle in properly. Beyond that, Newquay works because everything is close. Towan, Great Western, Fistral, Porth. Different moods, same town, all within easy reach.

Newquay is strong on convenience. Depending on the beach, you'll find lifeguards in season, toilets, showers, surf schools, board hire, cafes, bars and restaurants within a short walk. Tolcarne has the beach village setup right by the sand, while Fistral and the central beaches are especially well served.
Dogs on the beach
Newquay is one of the easier Cornish towns to work with if you're bringing a dog, but the rules are beach-specific. Fistral, Towan and Great Western are promoted as dog friendly all year, while some central or privately managed beaches, including Tolcarne, have seasonal restrictions. In practice that means you can usually find a dog-friendly option in town, even in summer, but you should still check the exact beach before you go.
