St Ives has no trouble selling itself. White light, turquoise water, little beaches folded around the headlands, and a town centre that still feels lively without losing its character. It can be busy, yes. But there are days when you walk down and think, fair enough, this is why people keep coming back.
Porthgwidden is the obvious fit for hut or pod hire. It's more sheltered than some of the bigger town beaches, close to the harbour side of town, and well set up for lingering. A beach pod here isn't just somewhere to dump your bags. It feels like part of the whole day.

St Ives is well supplied once you're down in town. Around Porthgwidden you'll find a beach cafe and bar, shop, seating and toilets, and the wider town has multiple public conveniences, food spots and easy walking links between beaches. The only real catch is the hills, which can make the return walk feel longer than it looked.
Dogs on the beach
St Ives is manageable with a dog, but you need to know the beaches. Porthmeor and Porthminster have daytime summer restrictions from 15 May to 30 September, while Porthgwidden and the Harbour are restricted during the day in July and August. But Bamaluz and Lambeth Walk stay dog friendly all year, so there is still somewhere to go even in peak season.
