Christchurch is more mixed than Bournemouth or Poole. Mudeford Sandbank is built around privately owned overnight huts that can be slept in from 1 March to 31 October. Friars Cliff and Gundimore are daytime-only hut areas, while Avon Beach huts are operated separately by Avon Beach Ltd.

Mudeford Sandbank is the big-name location and the only one here with overnight huts. Friars Cliff is the classic daytime hut stretch, Gundimore is smaller and quieter, and Avon Beach mixes beach huts with family facilities and food right by the sand.

Avon Beach lies just east of Mudeford Quay, with a sandy shore, café, shop and The Noisy Lobster restaurant. The beach-level car park provides access to the promenade; public facilities include toilets and showers.

Friars Cliff

Friars Cliff combines sand and shingle with views across Christchurch Bay towards the Isle of Wight. Steamer Point nature reserve is a short walk away above the beach.

The council lists a café, toilets, an accessible toilet and outdoor showers. Sloping paths reach the promenade, while access from Avon Beach’s beach-level car park provides another approach. Check the exact route to any hut before booking.

Mudeford Sandbank

Mudeford Sandbank and Mudeford Spit are names for the same stretch of coast. The sandy beach is reached from Hengistbury Head on foot, by bicycle or by land train. Plan for the journey from the car park rather than expecting to park beside a hut.

BCP lists cafés or restaurants, toilets and accessible toilets on the sandbank. There is no lifeguard service. Confirm the precise hut location, access and permitted use with the owner, as a general beach guide does not establish an individual hut’s rental terms.

Famous huts, good family beaches and a bit more breathing room

Christchurch feels different from the bigger resort strips further west. The beaches are still popular, but the harbour and bay shape the place in a way that gives it more variety. Mudeford Sandbank is the obvious headline act, with its long run of huts and the odd, brilliant feeling of being slightly cut off from the mainland. It is one of the most recognisable beach hut locations anywhere in the country.

But the town is not only about the spit. Avon Beach is the easy family option with food, facilities and a broad sandy stretch. Friars Cliff has a lovely settled feel and rows of daytime huts that make the promenade feel lived in. Gundimore is smaller and quieter again. That spread makes Christchurch a very good beach hut town if you want choice without the pace of Bournemouth.

Facilities, access & local beach rules

Avon and Friars Cliff are the easiest for straightforward family beach days, with toilets, showers, cafes, accessible facilities and parking close by. Gundimore has level access and nearby food options, while Mudeford Sandbank is more stripped back, with toilets at intervals and access on foot, by bike or via the land train.

Dogs on the beach

Christchurch is good with dogs if you know the beaches. Mudeford Sandbank and Gundimore allow dogs all year, with Gundimore asking for leads on the promenade and Mudeford asking for close control near the nature reserve. Avon Beach and Friars Cliff are seasonal restriction beaches, with dogs banned from 1 May to 30 September. So in summer there are still proper dog-friendly options, just not everywhere.
