Hire periods and minimum stays vary by hut.Whitby's chalet hire is handled through North Yorkshire Council, with seasonal and annual enquiries managed separately and daily and weekly bookings available through the booking portal. The wider beach chalet service also lists weekly, annual, seasonal and winter lets, so there is more flexibility here than people often assume.
West Cliff is the beach-chalet heart of Whitby and the only place most visitors really mean when they talk about Whitby chalets. The main beach, the Pavilion side, the promenade and the cliff-top attractions all cluster around the same part of town, which keeps everything compact once you are there.
The council’s Whitby chalets are on West Cliff Promenade, below the cliffs and beside the beach. Plan access using the paths and ramps; do not rely on the currently closed cliff lift.
Whitby has more presence than most seaside towns. The beach itself is broad and sandy, but it is the setting that gives it its pull: the high cliffs, the abbey above, the piers, the harbour and the way everything feels layered together rather than spread out flat. Even on an ordinary day it looks like somewhere worth lingering.
The chalets on West Cliff are a big part of that. They are practical, yes, but they also give the seafront a rhythm and colour that people remember. Add deckchair hire, the summer lifeguard patrol, the Pavilion side of town and all the family attractions on West Cliff, and Whitby ends up feeling like a proper beach town rather than just a town with a beach attached to it.

Whitby's beach is strong on the practical bits. There is summer RNLI lifeguard cover, deckchair hire, family attractions on West Cliff, nearby café options around the Pavilion, and a replacement wheelchair-accessible minibus during the summer while the cliff lift remains out of service. That matters, because the cliff access is a real part of using the beach here.
Whitby is mixed in summer. From 1 May to 30 September, dogs are banned on the main part of West Beach from the West Pier to roughly halfway along the chalet run, and the promenade between Whitby Pavilion and the western end of the chalets is a lead-only area in the same period. But Tate Hill Sands, on the east side of the river, is dog friendly all year. So there is still a high-season option, just not on the main chalet stretch.
