Beer is not one of the simplest towns for casual short-stay hut hire. East Devon mainly rents pitches, with hut owners supplying and erecting the hut themselves, and there is no electricity, only a communal water supply. So Beer suits people after a more established or seasonal setup rather than a quick online day booking.

The main difference is between the eastern side, which is more useful for dog owners in summer, and the western side, which is more restricted during the main season. The huts sit within a small, close-knit beach setting rather than across multiple promenades.

A working beach with real character, not a manufactured resort feel

Beer feels different from the bigger Devon seaside towns straight away. The beach is still tied to the village's fishing life, so it has that slightly unpolished, lived-in character that makes a place feel real. Boats get hauled up on the stones, the cliffs pull the bay in tight, and on a calm day the whole cove can look almost painted.

The huts suit the place. They are practical, close to the beach, and far more about making a day by the sea easier than showing off. And because Beer is smaller and more tucked away than somewhere like Paignton or Torquay, it tends to appeal to people who want a slower day. A swim, a walk, something to eat, maybe an hour doing very little at all. Which is usually a good sign.

Beer keeps things simple but useful. Parking right by the beach is limited, though there is a larger public car park in the village. Toilets are close to the beach, and the village itself is a short walk away for food and essentials. This is more cove and fishing beach than fully loaded resort frontage.

Dogs on the beach

Beer is partly dog friendly in summer rather than fully open. Dogs are allowed on the eastern half of the beach all year. On the western half, they are banned from 1 May to 30 September. That means you can still bring a dog in peak season, but only if you stick to the permitted section and keep an eye on the signs.
