Beach huts and chalets on the Devon coast

Devon's coastline is a bit of a shape-shifter. The south coast can feel relaxed and easy, with promenade towns, sheltered beaches and that familiar bucket-and-spade sort of charm. Then you get stretches that feel more rugged, more open, and a little less polished in a good way.

Exmouth is one of the county's best-known spots for beach huts and chalets, and it's easy to see why. The beach is long, the town is practical, and it works whether you're there for a full week or just one decent day by the sea. Budleigh Salterton has a quieter, more old-school feel, while Torbay brings in places like Paignton and Torquay, where the beach scene is busier and more resort-led.

What Devon does well is range. You can go for a simple family beach day, a seafront base with a bit more comfort, or a hut or chalet close to town so lunch, ice creams and toilets aren't half a mile away. That matters more than people admit.
