Torquay gives you two distinct styles of beach base. Corbyn Head works well for classic daytime hut hire through the main summer period. Meadfoot's chalets are more substantial, with power and worktop space, so they feel closer to a proper beach retreat than a simple changing cabin.

A more grown-up beach hut town, but still easy to use

Torquay can do lively if it wants to, but the beach hut side of the town is a little more measured. Corbyn Head has that neat Riviera frontage where everything feels close to hand, while Meadfoot sits a little apart from the busier centre and has a more settled, almost old-fashioned appeal.

Meadfoot is probably the one that sticks in the mind. The chalets there have a bit more substance than a simple day hut, and the views over the bay are excellent when the weather behaves itself. Corbyn Head, meanwhile, is the practical option. Straightforward, accessible, close to facilities, and easy to drop into for a full beach day without much fuss.

Corbyn Head has good practical cover with toilets, showers, taps, beach hut hire and deckchair hire. Meadfoot also has showers, toilets and easy access to refreshments nearby, plus the wider Torquay seafront means there is never much distance between the beach and the rest of the town.

Dogs on the beach

Torquay is mixed in summer. Corbyn Head is not dog friendly from 1 May to 30 September, and the dog restrictions also apply on parts of Meadfoot. But Torquay still has nearby all-year dog-friendly beaches such as Livermead, so the town works for dog owners if you are willing to choose your beach carefully rather than assume every stretch is open.
